Janette Millin Young, a trailblazing leader in both public service and private industry, has dedicated her career to politics, public relations, and community empowerment.

A former four-term senator of the U.S. Virgin Islands Legislature, Millin Young is known for her strategic vision and dedication to improving her community.

Public service runs deep in her roots. Her grandmother, Lucinda Sewer Millin, was the first woman elected to the Virgin Islands Legislature, and her father, Henry A. Millin, served as the territory's third elected Lieutenant Governor. Building on this legacy, Millin Young has cultivated more than 34 years of experience in policy-making, public relations, and advocacy, helping businesses navigate legislation, government processes, and community engagement.

Education

She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Sociology from Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

While still in college, she interned with the Office of the Governor under the Alexander A. Farrelly administration, solidifying her interest in public relations and government service and established the foundation for her career path.

Carrer Highlights

Millin Young launched her career as a public information officer in the Governor’s Office, quickly advancing to senior positions under both the Farrelly and Schneider administrations. She later transitioned to the private sector, taking on roles such as Senior Editorial Writer for the V.I. Daily News, Director of Corporate Affairs for Innovative Communication Corporation (ICC), and Public Relations Manager for Innovative Telephone.

In 2002, she founded V.I. Chronicles, a monthly magazine celebrating local culture, politics, and personalities. She also contributed her expertise to financial capital management firms, the Virgin Islands Legislature, and the Department of Health before returning to ICC in 2005. In 2010, she left ICC to pursue a successful senatorial campaign.

She established Millin Young Consulting, a public relations and government affairs consulting firm, in 2019. And most recently, she authored a book, Because They Dared, focusing on women’s empowerment.

Legislative Leadership

Elected to the 29th Legislature in 2010, Millin Young served as Chair of the Education, Youth, and Culture Committee and later led the Economic Development, Agriculture, and Planning Committee for two terms. Over her four terms, she participated in numerous committees, including Finance, Health, Workforce Development, and Housing, consistently championing policies that bolstered economic growth and community well-being.

Advocacy and Empowerment

In 2013, Millin Young founded Women Striving for Success, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women in business and professional development. As president, she has helped hundreds of women achieve their goals through mentorship, networking, and resource-sharing.

A leader in civic and professional circles, Millin Young’s contributions have been widely recognized. Her affiliations and achievements include:

  • Rotary Club of St. Thomas (Member since 1997, Past President 2007-2008)

  • National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (Executive Board Member, 2018)

  • National Council of State Legislatures (Eastern Region Representative for Women’s Legislative Network, 2015-2017)

  • NewDeal Leaders Alum (Member since 2014)

She has also served on the boards of the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce and the Nana Baby Home Foundation, among others.

Today

Janette Millin Young continues to leverage her vast experience in policy and public relations to advise businesses on legislation, government processes, reputation management, and community engagement strategies. She remains a committed advocate for economic development, women’s empowerment, and the growth of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
